- To install ProJPEG place it in your Photoshop plug-ins folder, and inside
- the file formats folder within the plug-ins folder if you are using
- Photoshop 3.x. The next time you launch Photoshop, ProJPEG will be an
- available option in Photoshop's file format menu.
-
- Photoshop will also use ProJPEG as the default means for opening existing
- JPEG files. Note: ProJPEG will not open CMYK JPEG files, but instead will return
- an error alert. You need to use 'open as' or check the 'show all
- types' checkbox and select 'JPEG' to open a CMYK JPEG file. Alternatively,
- Photoshop's JPEG support is not capable of opening a progressive JPEG file.
-
- To create a progressive JPEG file or use ProJPEG to create a baseline JPEG
- file, simply save your document as from grayscale or RGB mode and select
- 'ProJPEG' from the file format menu. ProJPEG will give you an options dialog
- with a slider control for compression quality and a check box for progressive.
-
- ProJPEG does not save alpha channels, so if you are using Photoshop 3.x, it
- will be disabled in the file format menu if your image contains alpha channels.
- In this case it is helpful to use 'Save a Copy As' and check don't include
- alphas.
-
- The slider control will allow you to set any allowable value for JPEG
- compression from zero to 100, but you really shouldn't set the quality below
- 10 or at least be very careful when doing so. Also, settings above 90 are
- a waste of space. The default setting of 40 will produce images with very
- good visual quality and very small size. Setting as low as 20 will produce
- good visual results for most images and save quite a bit more file size.
-
- Also, saving as progressive will significantly improve compression. The
- aesthetic effects are also very pleasing, as are the improved loading times.
-
- To save changes to a document opened with ProJPEG or last saved with ProJPEG,
- just hit 'Comand S'. The whole thing is that easy to use.
